Compline

Mondays, 9:30 pm

Compline is a short (27-minute), contemplative service, sung by candlelight, that emphasizes spiritual peace. It is offered when the work of the day is ended and the sun has set, when the quiet of evening settles on the hearts and minds of those assembled to give thanks for the blessings of the past day. From one perspective, Compline is the final service of the day in the Christian tradition of canonical hours. The word ‘Compline’ is derived from the Latin completorium, since the service marks the completion of the day.

From another perspective, also very ancient, Compline is the first service of the new day, for the new liturgical day begins with the setting of the sun.

Compline has been led on Mondays by a high-voice Compline Choir and on Tuesdays by a low-voice Compline Choir. Click here for information on how to join either of these groups.
